Looking after your braces after your braces
Getting braces is both exciting and overwhelming. Exciting because you’re on your way to a bright smile to last a lifetime. Overwhelming because you are adjusting to your new treatment.

7 tips to help you take care of your braces
Looking after your braces doesn’t have to be complicated but it is important. Taking good care of your braces ensures that they work their best for you and your smile.
Armed with the following tips and tricks, you will quickly become a master of braces care.
Keep everything clean
It’s important to keep your teeth clean to prevent cavities and decay. Because food can get trapped easily between your brackets and wires, we suggest that you brush and floss at least three times a day. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush, a dentist-recommended toothpaste, and a floss threader. Check out our brushing and flossing page for more tips on dental hygiene with braces.

Attend regular checkups with your dentist
Even though you’re receiving orthodontic treatment, it is still vital to visit your regular dentist for dental cleanings, cavity checks, and overall oral wellness. Your dentist and orthodontist can work together to keep your mouth happy, healthy, and clean.
Cut up your food
Biting into large pieces of food can be difficult with braces. Some food may even compromise the strength of your brackets so it is a good idea to cut your food into smaller bite-sized pieces. This way you can avoid food getting stuck in the wires or your brackets being loosened or broken.

Wear a mouthguard during sports
If you play sports, you should wear a mouthguard which is designed to protect your teeth in braces. If you take a blow to the mouth or jaw, a mouthguard will help to protect your braces as well as your teeth. Getting hit in the face without a mouthguard can really hurt and can cause bleeding or create broken or loose brackets. Play it safe and wear a high-quality mouthguard.
Use a fluoride mouthwash
Fluoride can help prevent cavities and strengthen your teeth. Some counties and areas have fluoridated water. If you don’t live in one of those areas, we recommend adding a daily mouthwash to your hygiene routine. Your dentist can recommend a good brand or provide you with fluoridated toothpaste and mouthwash.
