Your smile; straight for life

Once you’ve completed treatment, you will want your results to last a lifetime. That is why we recommend retainers to all of our patients.

Your smile; straight for life

Why do I need a retainer?

Once your teeth are beautifully straight, a retainer is essential for keeping them in their desired positions. Particularly in the weeks and months following treatment, a retainer is important to keep your teeth from moving back toward their original position. Wearing your retainer as recommended will ensure that your teeth stay in their new position for the long term.

Types of retainers.

At Haney Orthodontics, there are two main types of retainers: removable and permanent.

Your orthodontist will recommend the most appropriate for your unique case once treatment is complete. Both work effectively to hold your teeth in place and keep your smile straight for life.

Removable retainers
Retainers are made from metal, acrylic, or plastic and are typically worn at night or at certain times during the day. Dr. Haney will advise you best on when and how to wear yours. You may need to wear your retainer more in the immediate months after treatment, and then less as time goes on. A removable retainer is designed to fit your exact bite and will support your new smile perfectly.

Permanent retainers
Permanent retainers are strong, thin wires that are attached to the back of your front teeth. They are not visible when you smile or talk, and are small enough that you will quickly forget they are there. These are worn for the rest of your life to support your teeth in their new position. The benefit of permanent retainers is that you don’t have to remember to put them in, and they are much less bulky than removable retainers.
