We desire for all of our patients to achieve and maintain healthy, beautiful smiles that will last a lifetime. That’s why we aim to address all issues that hinder this goal – such as those that cause pain or discomfort, like sensitive teeth.

Common Causes of Tooth Sensitivity

Millions of people struggle with sensitive teeth, so if you’re one of them, you aren’t alone. Here are a few reasons why you might be dealing with the issue:

  •  Brushing too roughly
  •  Grinding teeth
  •  Consuming acidic foods & beverages
  •  Periodontal (Gum) Issues

What You Can Do

Having sensitive teeth, while a common problem, is very uncomfortable and inconvenient. However, there are some steps you can take to ease your discomfort.

Use A Sensitive Toothpaste

If you’re not doing so already, start brushing your teeth with a toothpaste specifically formulated for sensitive teeth. These special toothpastes protect the nerves and are very effective in relieving discomfort with regular use. Ask your orthodontist for a recommendation.

Be Gentle

When you brush and floss, do so thoroughly, but gently, with a soft-bristled brush. Throw out any brushes with hard or rough bristles. Avoid vigorous scrubbing, as this will wear down your tooth enamel and is not necessary for cleaning the teeth.

Visit Your San Rafael Orthodontist

Your orthodontist has many products and treatments that can help with sensitivity. If you are dealing with prolonged tooth sensitivity, your best option is to visit your San Rafael orthodontist. He or she will get your smile feeling great in no time!
