How to Take Care of Your Braces on Vacation

How to Take Care of Your Braces on Vacation

With vacation season around the corner, it’s hard to not get excited for a break. Yet taking break for the summer doesn’t mean you should take a break from your braces. At Haney Orthodontics in the Marin County area, we understand that when the summer sun is out, our patients like to have a little fun. From traveling, beach days, playing sports, or even just indulging in a few tasty cool treats, our orthodontists want you to be able to enjoy your summer. That is why Dr. Eric Haney and his highly skilled staff have compiled a list of four simple tips and tricks to help you take care of your braces or any other orthodontic treatment this summer!

Being Prepared

Whether you’re headed for a small weekend getaway or planning a lengthy excursion, it’s important to be prepared. If you are going out of town, it always helps to pack a few necessary orthodontic tools for maintaining your oral health and any orthodontic emergencies. At Haney Orthodontics, we recommend making a travel set for your orthodontic treatment, so you will always be prepared for your trip. Our orthodontists recommend:

  • Toothbrush
  • Fluoride toothpaste
  • Fluoride mouthwash
  • Dental floss
  • Floss threaders
  • Proxy brushes
  • Orthodontic wax
  • Interdental picks
  • Over-the-counter painkillers
  • Small Mirror
  • Cup or bottle of water

If you are planning to be away for a long time and are in the Marin County or San Anselmo, CA area, be sure to schedule an appointment with our orthodontists so we can ensure your orthodontic treatment is in the best shape before you head out on your journey.

Engaging in Physical Activities

As the summer sun arrives, so do a number of outdoor activities. Whether you plan on hiking, swimming, or playing any type of physical sport, it’s crucial to protect your braces or other orthodontic treatment. Some activities may seem harmless, but it’s always better to be cautious since there is always some risk. Our Marin County orthodontists recommend wearing a mouthguard to help protect your braces, and your mouth, from any physical contact.

Summer Treats

As the warm weather approaches, it can be tempting to give in to a sugary, chilly treat. Yet an ice cold soda or a cold scoop of ice cream may not be the healthiest option for you, or your teeth. At Haney Orthodontics, our orthodontists and staff care about your smile and your oral health. Which is why we recommend avoiding sugary treats, since they can lead to tooth decay, cavities, and other oral health issues. In addition, our Main County orthodontists recommend avoiding foods with artificial color, or anything that can stain your teeth. Things like coffee, sodas, or artificially colored juices and treats can darken the color of your teeth and ruin your enamel. Try opting for healthy, home made versions of your favorite treats to fill your cravings.

Orthodontic Emergencies

If you somehow encounter an orthodontic emergency during your vacation, don’t stress. Dr.Haney and his highly skilled staff want you to be prepared, so that you can continue enjoying your vacation. If you do encounter some discomfort or any orthodontic emergencies, feel free to reach out to us and schedule an appointment for when you return.
