Choosing Foods That Are Good for Your Teeth

Taking care of your teeth involves much more than brushing and flossing. In addition to scheduling regular checkups for cleaning and care, you can choose to eat a variety of foods that can benefit your oral health. San Anselmo orthodontist Dr. Haney talks to many patients about food choices, especially patients who have just been fitted for braces. 

Many of the foods you eat every day can have a direct effect on the health of your teeth – for good or ill. Here are a few of the foods that you can include in your diet to support healthy teeth.

Fresh fruits and vegetables

Fresh fruits and vegetables should form a cornerstone of anyone's food choices. They are packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other nutrients essential to keeping your whole body, including teeth and gums, healthy.

Dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, and collard greens are especially good sources of calcium, a mineral that helps build healthy bones and teeth.

Water and Milk

Some beverages, including soda and sugar-packed juices, are not very good for teeth. Instead, reach for a simple glass or water or milk. Milk has vitamins and minerals that support dental health. You can also enjoy cheese, low fat yogurt, cottage cheese, and other milk-based foods. If you are lactose intolerant or allergic to dairy milk, consider any of the plant-based milk products available. Beverages such as almond milk are also good sources of calcium and are frequently supplemented with a host of other important vitamins. 

Healthy Snacks

Even the best meal planner can reach for unhealthy snack foods. Between meals, give yourself options such as:

  • Puffed rice cakes
  • Whole wheat crackers
  • Carrot sticks and hummus
  • Raw, sliced veggies and low-fat dressing
  • String cheese
  • Lightly salted nuts
  • Sliced fruit and low-sugar yogurt

These will help keep you full and satisfied until your next meal.
