What Can I Eat Now That I Have Braces?

You can eat at any time upon leaving our office, but we suggest that you be careful with the types of foods that you choose. We use adhesive to attach the braces to your teeth, and this takes 24 hours to completely adhere. There are many foods that can be harmful to your braces, so we have created list of foods to avoid for your convenience. Initially, you will want to stick to mainly soft foods that are easy on your teeth.

Are My Braces Going To Be Painful or Uncomfortable?

After leaving our office, you may feel soreness or tenderness which can be eased with the help of over the counter pain relievers. Initially, while your mouth will still be adjusting to braces, it is normal to experience some discomfort or difficulty getting your lips around your them. This will subside as you get used to your braces. You may always coat your brackets with orthodontic wax if your mouth is feeling a lot of irritation.

What Can I Do To Ease Discomfort and Ensure Optimal Response To New Braces?

The following is a list of routine steps that we ask our patients to take before leaving the office:

1. Use your finger and tongue to check if the wire ends are poking either your tongue or cheek.

2. Make sure that you understand what you are asked to do prior to your first follow-up appointment (e.g. foods to avoid or specific hygiene instructions).

3. Make sure that you have enough of the essential supplies (e.g. orthodontic wax, elastic bands, special cleaning aids).

4. Make sure that your next appointment is scheduled, as postponing appointments at such an early stage can extend your overall treatment time).

5. Try to bring up any lasting questions or concerns with us. We want to ensure that you feel confident and prepared moving forward with your new braces!
